Reading Between the Lines

Digital Deceit

The patterns within the language we speak can reveal our assumptions, biases and even criminal tendencies. Associate professor of communication Jeffrey Hancock studies our lies, from the fibs people tell on social media sites, to the language of psychopaths. According to Hancock’s research, if you want a window into someone’s soul, don’t look at their eyes, look at their Facebook profile. He recently discussed Internet dishonesty at a TED Talk in Winnepeg, Canada. Watch the video here.

Eric Baumer is interested in a different kind of dialogue: the national conversation about political issues carried out daily in media outlets and political blogs. His free, online tool, Reflext, analyzes 40 news sites and blogs and creates visualizations that illustrate associations between words. Check it out here.
