Ice Bears of the Beaufort

By Ellen Leventry '95

Hailed as "groundbreaking" and "captivating," "Ice Bears of the Beaufort," a documentary detailing polar bear survival in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), was a five-year labor of love for CALS alumnus Arthur C. Smith '75 and his wife, fellow filmmaker, Jennifer. Currently threatened by oil development, the Beaufort is home to one of the highest concentrations of polar bear denning and birthing habitat in Alaska. Shot without narration, this meditative documentary chronicling the importance of this polar bear "sanctuary" was awarded the Animal Advocacy prize by the Artivist Film Festival in 2009. This first eight minutes of the film are presented here. For more information, please visit: www.polarartproductions.com and www.icebearsofthebeaufort.com.
