Outstanding Alumni Awards

Joseph A. ManelskiJoseph A. Manelski '56 retired in 1997 after a long and successful career as chief executive officer, owner, and founder of American Realty Tax Services; a privately-held firm based in Vienna, Virginia. Joe used the proceeds from the sale of his business to form a family foundation to support his charitable interests, which include higher education.

Joe grew up on his father's thriving Long Island fruit and vegetable farm. During the Depression the family lost everything. Joe was determined and resourceful and worked his way through Cornell by selling fruits and vegetables. After graduation, he began his career with Kroger Foods Company.

He interrupted his professional career to pursue a commission in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of commander before retiring in 1984. After completing his military service, Joe reestablished his professional path, a path that would eventually lead to the foundation of his own highly successful business.

Joe is a longtime member of the Cornell Club of Washington and the CALS Alumni Association. Typical of his devotion to Cornell, he was among the first alumni to come forward with support for the renovation of Mann Library. He has also opened his home to the Cornell Solar Decathlon team, providing food, shelter, transportation and mentorship to a rotating cast of 150 team members who relied on his hospitality to get them through the rigors of the biennial competition hosted on the National Mall by the U.S. Department of Energy.

He is also very active member of the Rotary Club of Vienna, Virginia, and a volunteer and donor for FACETS, a non-profit providing housing programs and services to the less fortunate. Joe also supports the American Horticultural Society of Alexandria, Virginia.

Joe resides in McLean, Virginia. He has a son David, and a beloved grandson.
