Frederick R. FrankFrederick R. Frank '79 is president of Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars, a position he has held since 1993. After graduating from Cornell, Frederick worked for Banfi Vintners in sales from 1979 to 1982, before attending the Geisenheim Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology in West Germany in 1982 - 1983. He then became the managing director of Old Brookville Vineyards at Banfi from 1984 to 1993.

Under Frederick's leadership, Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellar's production and honors have increased greatly. Wines from Dr. Frank's winery are now available in more than 30 states, making them among the most visible and well known produced in New York State. The winery draws 70,000 visitors each year, providing a considerable boost for the local economy.

Unique to the New York State wine industry, Dr. Frank's winery employs four winemakers, each with a different specialty. The winery's marketing efforts for its Riesling has helped attract worldwide attention for all of the state's Riesling production. In 2009 alone, Dr. Frank's winery received 67 gold medals for its wines at various competitions. Wine Enthusiast nominated the winery for 2009 American Winery of the Year two years after the industry publication named Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars the Finger Lakes' Most Award-Winning Winery.

Frederick, the winery, and its wines have been featured in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Wine & Spirits Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, Denver Post, New York Times, and USA Today.

Frederick has been a two-term member of the CALS Dean's Advisory Council and is a member of the Liberty Hyde Bailey Leadership Society. He has also served as a district director of the CALS Alumni Association. Since 1999, he has provided staff or his own time for the annual Reunion Weekend wine tasting event, which draws more than 500 alumni and guests each June. Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars is one of the few wineries that have participated in the wine tasting each year it has been held.

In 2008, the winery and the Frank family donated a collection of 132 books, which belonged to Dr. Konstantin Frank, to the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station's Frank A. Lee Library. The collection includes 19thand 20th-century titles on horticulture, plant science, viticulture, enology, chemistry, nature, history, and literature.

Frederick has been a member of the Finger Lakes Wine Country Tourism Board, Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce Board, Steuben County Conference and Visitor Center Board, and the Keuka Wine Trail Board, of which he is a past president. Frederick and his wife Maryclaire reside in Painted Post and have three children attending CALS, Meaghan '11, Gretchen '12 and Kyle '14.
